The Emotional Side of Retirement—from the Outside Looking in

As a person whose career is helping other find success in retirement, I understand that it’s not just about numbers; it’s a profound life transition that brings with it a range of emotional and psychological challenges. Lately, I have read several stories on the happiness factor in retirement. In this blog post, we’ll discuss the less-explored aspects of retirement planning—the emotional and psychological dimensions—and provide insights to help you navigate this important phase
of life.

Understanding the emotional transition

Retirement marks a significant shift from a structured work life to a period of newfound freedom. It’s common for some of my clients to experience a mix of emotions, including excitement, uncertainty, and even a sense of loss. Change in the best of circumstances is very hard, and you have spent the better part of your life “going to work.” If you are like some of my clients, you might be asking “Now what?” or “How will I stay busy?”, or even feeling of loss of friendships with co-
workers. Research indicates that the emotional impact of retirement can be akin to the stages of grief. You may move through all of the feelings: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance (Kubler-Ross model).

The identity shift

If you are like me, who I am is very closely tied to my professional life. I am in my office helping clients for more of my awake time during the day than doing anything else. And your identity might be closely tied to your professional role. Retirement can lead to a reevaluation of one’s sense of self and purpose. It’s crucial to proactively address questions like “Who am I now?” and “What gives my life meaning?” Engaging in activities that align with personal values and interests
can help foster a positive sense of identity in retirement. This new shift can give you greater purpose and reasons to find new activities that fill your day, help you get out of the house, or even bring you happiness that work never could.

financial stress and anxiety

I know what stress and anxiety can be—when I leave the house without my phone, I’m a wreck, I can barely think straight. The same is true in having uncertainty about financial stability during retirement. It can contribute to stress and anxiety. Let’s talk about it, as this is a huge part of why I do what I do. We want to address these concerns through a comprehensive Retirement Compensation Plan. This planning should happen before you retire. Having a clear understanding of your retirement income, expenses, and potential risks can provide peace of mind. Just knowing that you have replaced the monthly check can help. But, let’s take it all the way and try and reduce all the stressors in your upcoming journey in retirement.

building a support system

Retirement often involves a shift in social dynamics, with changes in daily interactions and routines. Building a robust support system, including friends, family, and community connections, can help combat feelings of isolation and contribute to overall well-being. Keep up going to the gym, going to lunch with friends, and stay active.

Finally, as you embark on the journey of retirement, remember that it’s not just a financial milestone but a holistic life transition. By acknowledging and addressing the emotional and psychological aspects, you can create a retirement that is not only financially secure, but also emotionally fulfilling.

Securing Your Legacy

Recently I was working with a client and, unfortunately, his spouse passed away. Unknown to my client, his wife was the sole owner of several life insurance policies.

As we reach December, reflecting on the past year is an integral part of preparing for the approaching one. 2023 has been a year filled with invaluable lessons, growth, and moments that have reshaped not just my life, but hopefully yours as well.
